FAQ Friday: Where to start?!

Hello there! I have really enjoyed compiling these FAQ Friday posts, I hope they have been helpful! If you have any questions you would like answered in one of these posts, be sure to leave a comment and I will do my best to get your questions answered!

A question that I actually ask clients frequently is about a color scheme for the room. This can be a really broad question, and I think can be intimidating to clients. In preparation for a design consult, or just doing a project yourself, it can be helpful to check out color schemes others have put together to receive inspiration for what you might like.

A great resource for this is design-seeds.com as well as... you guessed it... PINTEREST :)

Also, creating your own color scheme can be great! An easy way to do this is by finding an inspiration photo of something colorful that you love, then going to a paint store and assembling paint chips to match the inspiration photo.

It will give you something similar to the above pictures with one difference, it is yours! Completely original :)

My heart.

My heart is a bit sad because I had to drop this handsome guy off at the airport yesterday. He had his first PA school interview today and blew it out of the water!!! So proud of him :) And he will be home tomorrow so yay. And yes, I am a baby. Been married for nearly 3 years and still tear up when I have to say goodnight and hang up the phone. Boo.

This Quinn of mine is so great. Isn't he cute holding my gorgeous niece Stella? I am so so proud of him and excited to see what the future has in store for us! I have never met someone so determined and hard working :) He is absolutely the best. And he is all mine :) Just had to take a second to brag. Design tips coming tomorrow!

Update on my mirror post from February... This little beauty from Pier 1 {aka my favorite mirror of all time} is on the summer clearance sale! It is marked down from $299 to $199! Still a little steep, but quite the deal I think!

Mint Condition

Am I the only one who has a mint obsession lately??? It is just such a fabulous color. So rich and unique! I feel like it is an update on all the aqua craze that existed for the past few years. Here are some of my favorite "minties" I have been stalking :) Hope you find them as beautifully inspiring as I do!

Yes. Girl Scout cookies steal my heart every year. Especially the thin mints :)

FAQ Friday: Pillow arrangements

For this FAQ Friday, I wanted to discuss and give tips for pillow arrangement. A lot of people know how to pick pillows/patterns they like, but when it comes to arranging it can be a bit of a puzzle! But do not fret, because help is just below!

Tip #1: As a general rule, I tend to use an odd number of pillows. 3,5 or 7, it doesn't matter:) Odd numbers just tend to add more interest to a sofa than an even number.

Tip #2: Graduate the sizes. Start with bigger pillows such as a 24x24 at the ends of the couch, and as you work to the middle of the couch, place smaller pillows such as 22x22 or 20x20.

Tip #3: Don't be afraid to use different shapes! A lumbar pillow, bolster, or round cushion looks great in a mix of the usual square pillows. Add some spice:)

Tip #4: How many pillows? I think that depends on an individual's style. Questions you need to ask yourself include: Do I want to have to move pillows every time I want to sit down on my couch? How many different fabrics do I want to display? Do I like a lot of pattern, or am I attracted to a more clean and simple look?

And voila! You {hopefully} have a pillow arrangement that is beautiful, aesthetically pleasing and comfortable to you and your home!

Awesome Architecture

Yesterday was a long day, but very fun! I was asked to accompany a youth group on a tour of Temple Square in Salt Lake City. I have lived in Utah my whole life, and seen the buildings in Salt Lake many times, but never quite like this. It was so amazing to see the architectural thought and detail that went into so many of the buildings there. One of my favorites was the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.

The architecture was phenomenal:)

Joss & Main: Bennett Studios

As I was browsing today, I came across this fabulous collection on Joss & Main! So many pretty furniture options! I am loving everything tufted lately. Joss & Main is a great source because they showcase different pieces/collections for a brief time period but usually the prices are wonderful. There is something new to drool over every day! Hurry! Only 23 hours left of this event!

LOVE this console. Only $228! Not too shabby.

FAQ Friday

One of the most common questions that I get asked by clients is how to effectively mix patterns. Here are a few tips or hints that I have found helpful:

1. Start with a color scheme. When exploring and planning color schemes, it can be easiest to find a multi-color fabric to draw from first. It can make mixing in other patterns simpler such as geometric prints or stripes.

2. Avoid excess use of similar prints {lots of stripes, multiple floral prints, several ikat patterns}, rather mix each of these prints in moderation.

3. Try to use different scales of pattern. For example, if you have a very small polka dot, try to find a larger scale floral to add to the design.

4. Don't be afraid to take some risks and use some color! While there are design rules to be followed, sometimes boundaries and limits can be tastefully broken to satisfy personal and unique style. Be brave:)

Here are some spaces where pattern is mixed beautifully. Hope that helps some of you!

Nesting

Oh goodness I apologize for my lack of posts these last couple of weeks! With my brothers wedding behind us, it was time for me to begin making a plan for the nursery! We have got just over 3 months til our little lady joins us, and I have been dreaming of the perfect room for her. Not to bore you with baby overload, but I thought today I would share some of the inspiration for her room, then in another couple of months I can show the finished product:)
